10 Creative Birthday Activities for Kids of All Ages

Planning your child’s birthday party can be stressful, especially if you’re looking for budget-friendly options. Keep the kids entertained with this list of ten fun and silly activities! Whether your kids are sporty, creative, or crafty, these games will keep them laughing all year long.

1. Backyard Olympic Games:

Adopt your favorite outdoor games into an Olympics-style format! Split the kids into three teams to play anything from soccer to a water-balloon toss. Make your own DIY medals using cardboard, shiny foil, and string, and hand them out to each winning team at the end of the game.

2. Treasure Hunt:

Hide slips of paper around the house or yard to lead your little ones to buried treasure! This activity is infinitely customizable: use fun rhymes for younger kids, or come up with trickier clues for the teens. Don’t forget to provide age-appropriate “treasure” as well. (If all else fails, candy is always a crowd-pleaser.)

3. Balloon Tennis:

For an indoor-friendly game, inflate some balloons as the “tennis balls” and use paper plates and plastic spoons/popsicle sticks to make your “tennis rackets.” Kids can hit their “tennis balloons” over a strip of tape on the ground (the “net”), or they can compete to see who can keep their balloon in the air the longest.

4. Musical Hoops:

Musical chairs just got a lot more fun! Place one hula hoop per child on the floor and let the kids march around the room while the music plays. When the music stops, the kids have to put at least one body part into a hoop. If they don’t, they’re out! After each round, one hoop gets removed. At the end of the game, the remaining players all try squishing into the last hoop by any means necessary.

5. Slime:

This trendy activity only requires a handful of basic supplies like baking soda, liquid glue, and food coloring. Find an easy slime recipe online and pick up everything at your local grocery or craft store. Get ready for the kids to make a huge mess—you might want to take this activity outside, and remind guests to bring a change of clothes and a towel.

6. DIY Photo Booth:

Capture some silly photo memories with this party activity. Prepare some funny props and dress-up clothes for the kids. Use wrapping paper or fabric to create a backdrop, and use a camera software on your laptop or phone to let the kids take their own photos. Encourage your party guests to bring their own dress-up clothes, strike funny poses in front of the camera, or play around with photo filters!

7. 5-Minute Plays:

Split the kids up into small groups, and have them design their own skits. Let them tap into their Shakespearean side by creating their own characters, stories, and script. 9. Paint Twister:

Get grubby with this extra-messy version of Twister. Purchase a Twister mat from a thrift store or used toy store and lay it outside. Before the game starts, pour colored paint onto each dot on the mat. Play Twister as usual and let the colorful chaos ensure. (And don’t forget to give the mat a good rinse after playing!)

10. Pen Pals:

All you’ll need for this game is blank paper and drawing supplies. Split the kids into pairs and have them sit back-to-back. One partner has an object that they have to describe to their partner, without saying the object’s name or explaining what the object can be used for. The other person must draw out what their teammate is describing and try to guess what the object is. The team that guesses the object first wins!
